A Wellness Event: Mindful Mornings

Laura and Beth

One of the things I enjoy about living in Cape Town is the number of small wellness and learning events that take place across the city. These gatherings are usually small and relaxed, often hosted in beautiful studios or welcoming home spaces, and they offer the opportunity to slow down, learn something new, and connect with others who are also interested in living well.

I’ve been blessed with the opportunity to attend two such events recently and here’s my story about the Mindful Morning event I joined on Saturday, 7 March. The event was co-ordinated and hosted by BalanceWorks and The Wellness Sister

BalanceWorks is a holistic wellness practice that supports people in restoring balance across the mental, emotional, and physical aspects of health. Through approaches such as kinesiology and integrative wellness practices, they help individuals identify imbalances and develop practical ways to support the body’s natural ability to heal and maintain wellbeing.

Beth Movement Session

The movement class started with the sounds of Better When I’m Dancing by Meghan Trainor, which certainly got me in the mood. We were reminded to only do what we could, to be mindful of injuries, and not to overdo it. The exercises included the use of light weights and resistance bands, adding gentle strength training to the exercises. By working against resistance, the muscles stay engaged throughout the movement, helping to improve strength, stability, flexibility, and overall functional fitness.

I particularly appreciated how Beth structured the movement exercises. She used chairs and standing movements rather than floor exercises, which made the session feel far more accessible. For many people, getting up and down from the floor can feel uncomfortable or even daunting, so this thoughtful approach made it easier for everyone to participate.

Laura du Plessis, known as The Wellness Sister, runs a nurse-led wellness service focused on bringing accessible healthcare and health education directly to individuals, families and workplaces. Through services such as health screenings, vaccinations, wound care, chronic condition monitoring and mother-and-baby support, her practice aims to make primary healthcare more convenient and personal. The focus is not only on treating illness, but also on prevention, education, and empowering people to take an active role in their health and wellbeing.

Laura spoke about the importance of cardiovascular health, explaining that the condition of our heart and blood vessels plays a major role in the risk of heart disease, heart failure and strokes. With my history of heart issues, this section really hit home!

Several factors influence cardiovascular health, including cholesterol levels, blood pressure, diabetes, lifestyle habits and physical activity. She also explained how strokes occur, the two main types of strokes, and some of the key warning signs people should be aware of. One of the strongest takeaways from the session was how important it is to recognise symptoms quickly and act fast, as early action can make a significant difference in an emergency. Laura also spoke about the importance of knowing your numbers, including cholesterol levels, which are typically measured through a lipogram test. For those wanting to learn more about their own cardiovascular health, Laura encouraged attendees to reach out to her directly through The Wellness Sister for more information or to arrange a consultation.

The final part of the morning focused on self-care, which was a lovely way to end the event. Each participant received a beautiful skincare travel kit from ULA Skin, and Sarah and Tiffany guided us through the range and its philosophy.

ULA Skin is built around hypochlorous acid (HOCl), a naturally occurring molecule produced by the body’s immune system to fight harmful bacteria and support healing. In skincare, it is known for its ability to calm inflammation, reduce redness and support the skin’s natural recovery, making it particularly suitable for sensitive or compromised skin.

The range has been developed over several years and is designed to be both effective and simple, supporting healthy skin without complicated routines. The products are formulated to be gentle, antibacterial, non-irritating and pH balanced, and are suitable for a variety of skin types.

It was a relaxed and informative session, and the travel kits meant everyone left with something practical to try at home. As someone who believes that self-care and wellbeing go hand in hand, it felt like a fitting way to round off the morning.

Tickets for the event were R350 per person and included complimentary refreshments and a goodie bag. All in all, it was a relaxed, informative and welcoming morning, and definitely value for money.
