Finding Creativity with FIND

This morning I attended a coffee and creative networking event hosted by Diane Lindemann and Fiona Fitzpatrick, aka FIND.

Sharon Leslie (of Lime Creative limecreative.co.za) and I went along to connect with other women entrepreneurs, and from the moment we arrived, we were met with genuine warmth. It felt easy, open, and welcoming, the kind of space where conversations flow naturally and people are truly interested in each other.

The event was hosted at the beautifully vibrant My Sweet Art Cafe, in Table View. It’s one of those places that immediately sparks something in you – it’s colourful, creative, and full of life, with that lovely hum of people chatting and laughing.

At the heart of it all was Antoinette, the owner. She was so supportive, encouraging, helpful, and incredibly patient. She created a space where it felt easy to explore, to try something new, and to simply enjoy the process.

Now, painting isn’t something I naturally gravitate towards – quite the opposite. Give me words and content any day but a blank canvas and a paintbrush leaves me cold. On top of which, being ambidextrous (normally my superpower) left me wondering which hand to use!

I eventually got over myself, settled on using my slightly more dominant left hand, and started painting. At one point I found myself holding brushes in both hands, which felt quite fitting for the moment!

I kept thinking of that Dr. Seuss quote:

“Think left and think right and think low and think high. Oh, the thinks you can think up if only you try!”

And after a little while, what with the rhythm of the brush strokes, the conversation flowing around the table and the incredibly delicious café mochas, I found myself relaxing and (much to my surprise) enjoying the experience!

Now, my “masterpiece” is definitely not gallery-worthy, but it will hang in my office as a constant reminder that we can do anything when we put our minds to it.

What a lovely morning – so good for the soul – and a gentle reminder that stepping into something different can bring unexpected joy, fresh energy, and meaningful connection.

  1. Thanks so much for joining us this morning Michelle. You’ve used a word that I instinctively felt in the room this morning: Joy! The joy of just allowing yourself to be without any expectation.

May your art work bring you joy every time you look at it.
