HPV, Self-Testing, and Protecting Our Health

At Cuppa Daisies, we love working with passionate, purpose-driven clients. One of these is The Wellness Sister, a registered nurse who provides home-based and workplace wellness checks with heart, integrity, and compassion.

Today’s blog is one of our first Guest Blogs, and it’s an important one. We’re talking about HPV, cervical health, and how simple self-testing can be a game-changer for women across South Africa.

HPV, or Human Papillomavirus, is the most common viral infection of the reproductive tract. It affects a huge percentage of the population, around 80% of sexually active people will get it at some point, and yet it often goes undetected. Many people never show symptoms, and that’s where the real risk lies. Certain high-risk strains of HPV can lead to cervical, throat, anal and other cancers.

But here’s the good news: cervical cancer is one of the most preventable cancers. With regular screening and early intervention, it’s very treatable. Prevention starts with being informed and taking that first small, but powerful, step.

Thanks to modern healthcare options, you no longer have to wait in long clinic queues or rearrange your entire day just to get tested. Self-testing for HPV gives you privacy, flexibility, and peace of mind. You collect the sample yourself, in the comfort of your own home, and The Wellness Sister will send it to the lab. That’s it.

No fancy equipment, no awkward conversations, no pressure. The kits come with clear instructions, and when used correctly, they are just as accurate as tests done in a clinic. They’re ideal for women aged 25 to 65 – especially those who might feel anxious about going for a pap smear, live far from a clinic, or simply find themselves short on time.

If your results come back negative, you can breathe a sigh of relief and continue with routine screening as recommended. If your results are positive, it doesn’t mean you have cancer. It means that high-risk HPV was detected, and The Wellness Sister will explain the next steps. This may include more frequent testing or further investigation.

In many cases, the body clears the virus on its own. The key is knowing what’s going on inside your body so you can make informed decisions about your health.

Please note that if you’re pregnant, have unusual symptoms (like unexplained bleeding), or haven’t been screened in several years, it’s a good idea to speak directly to your doctor before doing a self-test.

There’s also a preventative option available: the HPV vaccine. It protects against the most harmful strains of the virus and is recommended for girls and boys before they become sexually active. By vaccinating early, we give the next generation a powerful shield against multiple HPV-related cancers. Vaccination, education, and open conversations help break the silence around cervical health. The more we talk about it, the more we normalise it.

We know it can feel overwhelming to think about testing or receiving results. That’s why The Wellness Sister offers not just test kits, but support. She’s here to walk the journey with you, from helping you decide if self-testing is right for you, to talking you through your results, or simply answering any questions you might have.

Looking after your cervical health isn’t just another item on the to-do list. It’s an act of self-care, self-awareness, and self-respect. It’s also something that might inspire a sister, friend, or colleague to take action too.

If you’ve been putting off a screening, now’s the time. You have options. You have support. And your health is always worth prioritising.
