A Musical Maverick with a Light Touch

Meet Brian Currin, a man who practically bleeds music! He’s not just passionate about crafting awesome music playlists; he’s also a whiz at whipping up cost-effective websites and conjuring up digital art.

Brian, who hails from Port Elizabeth, South Africa, has been surrounded by music his entire life. His dad was an organist and his mom a pianist, so it’s safe to say music was the family business. Early on, Brian humorously realized his own musical talents weren’t quite virtuosic. No biggie! Instead, he channeled his energy into becoming a super sleuth of sound, dedicating himself to exploring and researching music with an enthusiasm that’s still going strong.

After a stint in the military from 1977 to 1981 and a detour into corporate sales and marketing, Brian’s life hit a major high note with his involvement in the incredible re-discovery of Rodriguez. That’s right, the “Searching For Sugar Man” legend! This opened up a whole new world of musical adventures for him.

Since then, Brian’s been a true rockstar (pun intended!) in the South African music scene. He even co-founded Rhythm Online, South Africa’s very first online music download store, keeping us grooving from 2006 to 2012. And if you’ve seen “Searching For Sugar Man,” you’ll recognize Mabu Vinyl, the legendary music store he managed from 2013 to 2019. Oh, and for a dose of smooth tunes, he hosted the Vagabond Jazz & Blues Show on All Jazz Radio from 2012 to 2019, proving his musical tastes are as diverse as a well-stocked record store.

A true champion of South African music, Brian also co-owns several music websites, including the granddaddy of them all, The South African Rock Encyclopedia, which he founded way back in 1999. His deep dives into music research and his fantastic sleeve notes are all neatly documented on Discogs.com for your perusal.

Pretty cool, right? Brian’s journey is a testament to the fact that you don’t need to be a performer to make a massive impact on the music world!
